The Beatitudes // Jesus in His Own Words // Dr. Gary Singleton

â€¢ Series: JESUS IN HIS OWN WORDS

Summary of Matthew 5:1-12 (The Beatitudes): In this passage, Jesus begins His Sermon on the Mount with the Beatitudes, a series of blessings that describe the values and attitudes of the Kingdom of Heaven. Each Beatitude starts with "Blessed are," indicating a state of joy and contentment found in obedience to Christ. Jesus declares blessings upon the poor in spirit, those who mourn, the meek, those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, the merciful, the pure in heart, the peacemakers, and those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake. He promises rewards such as comfort, inheritance of the earth, satisfaction, mercy, seeing God, being called children of God, and a great reward in heaven. The Beatitudes challenge conventional views of happiness and success, emphasizing spiritual wealth and divine approval over worldly achievements. Discussion Questions: 1. Refection on Personal Experience: - Which Beatitude resonates most with you in your current season of life, and why? - Share a time when you experienced one of these blessings in a personal or unexpected way. 2. Community and Application: - How can our community support one another in embodying the attitudes and values described in the Beatitudes? - What practical steps can we take to live out these principles in our daily lives and interactions with others? 3. Challenges and Encouragement: - Which Beatitude do you find the most challenging to live out, and what obstacles do you face in doing so? - How can we encourage and pray for each other to grow in these areas and stay faithful to Jesus' teachings?
